About the playbook
The Head of Product Playbook is for CPOs, VPs of Product, and others who need to quickly introduce new techniques to their Product team. It provides a growing library of tactical plays that help you level up the skills of your product managers and your company.
When I start leading a new Product team, I need to be able to roll out operational changes quickly. I feel like I have about a year to make a difference before I become part of the system. So I have a set of techniques I use repeatedly. Some of these things I've rolled out a dozen times or more.
The problem? I can't count on people being familiar with any specific techniques. There's no worthwhile product management certification or training that I've found. I needed to quickly teach the PMs the concepts without fighting for training budget or booking expensive offsites.
So I created these plays - reusable patterns that can be applied in the right context.
Each play includes details about the appropriate context for use, tips about introducing it to the team, and cautions/warnings about where the play should not be applied.
Several times per month, I send subscribers new plays that you can apply right away with your PMs. All content is written and edited by me and other real humans. No AI-generated filler here.
If you subscribe today, you'll get access to the first plays as well as email newsletters about new content when it's available.
Paid Membership
I want to be up-front with you: Long-term, this will become a paid membership site with a free tier. Some plays will be available for free subscribers, some will be for paid subscribers only, and I intend to also include materials for paid subscribers that will help you deploy plays faster - templates, miro boards, and scripts. My hope is that even if you deploy just one play each year, your subscription pays for itself in the 2-3 hours you save.
Meet people like you
Product communities are a mixed bag of experience levels. When you subscribe to the Head of Product Playbook, you join a community of senior leaders. You'll meet other CPOs, VPs of Product, Product Directors, and others who are also trying to help their PMs do their best work.
Who's Alex?
I've been leading product teams through transformation for over 15 years. When a company reaches a moment where their growth isn't going the way they want it too, the product managers often start doing weird things in response. I believe product managers mostly want to do the right thing, and so I put in place the right structures and behaviors so that product can work as a high-performing team.
I started out as an engineer, building web applications, and after ten years of that realized I was much more passionate about the business and people side. I've built startups and consulted in large enterprises, from fintech to music tech and even building tablets for preschool kids. Across all of these domains I've gathered a ton of patterns that work in many different places.
And I've met so many great domain experts leading Product for the first time, who had plenty of passion and knowledge but lacked tools for leading people.
I post on LinkedIn from time to time, but that's for general audiences.
